Emma's top tips for using Facebook as a non profit organization

Start by identifying:
What is your mission on Facebook?
Is it to highlight your member agencies? Raise awareness? Strengthen relationships with folks at City Hall? Attract new donors? It's fine to have all of the above, but separate and be aware of who your talking to and why.

Who is your target audience?
Member agencies? City Hall? Member's of the community? Women in need of help and support? Donors?

What are your targets?
More fans and more engagement! Engagement leads to more engagement. It's all about getting the ball rolling.

11 tips:
1. Make it easier for your audience
Keep About section updated and complete! Include all basic info so that people don't have to visit your website. Cover image should show who you are, straight away.

2. Get the ball rolling, engage
The more people that engage in your post (like, share, comment) the more people will see it. When posting negative news that people won't ”like”? Use the Like if you dislike-trick. You wan't people to give the thumbs up.

You can help by liking and sharing yourself! At the top you can switch from posting/liking/commenting as your page to yourself. However when you post on the page, you should always post as the page not yourself

3. Focus and relevance
Stay focused and don’t stray too far off your main topic or you’ll confuse your fans. What is your mandate? When are people interested in hearing your opinion?

4. Be supersmart or superfast
You want to add something to people's understanding of a topic that others might already have posted in their feed. Try to be either FIRST or SMARTEST. Add your unique opinion or some extra info in their so it adds new value to old news and is not just a re-post among others.

5. What's in it for your fans?
Make sure you provide value to fans. Surveys shows Facebook users like pages to: stay informed, get entertained, Interact and connect, get educated and show support. Check Insights/Overview on your page to see which posts have worked and not worked among your followers in the past.

6. Good pictures!
Pictures are perfect for people to share! Close ups. outdoors, people that are recognized by your fans, something that catches your eye, color, bright, banners! Make an effort when you take them - it's worth it. Not as hot: meetings, trainings, panels, indoors, blurry..

Use photos and captions to summarize an event and get your message out there. Upload photos in an album, not one at a time.

7. Post regularly and well-timed
Twice a week is fine. Twice a day at the most if something extraordinary happens. It's OK to be quiet, but the more you post the more you have the chance to engage. Facebook pages receive half of their reach within 30 minutes, so find the best time for your audience. Go into Insights/Likes and check who your bulk audience is: for exemple: women 34-45 yrs. What does their day look like? When are they the most active? Before lunch and after lunch? Early morning? My experience is that 10-12 pm and 1-3 pm works best for this target audience.

8. Short and direct
Posts should be as short, ”clean” and direct as possible! It's challenging but makes a difference. Try to remove unnecessary words, and be sure to use key words – so that people who aren't as familiar with the topic as you are also can follow. Posts between 100 and 250 characters get the most likes, comments and shares.

9. Personal and informal is OK
Be human! A "Happy Friday", or other informal language can sometimes be good to get closer to your audience.

10. Be responsive!
Respond to (almost) ALL comments. If some one is being a nuisance respond twice, then ban/block the user. Delete offensive comments.

11. The 80/20-rule
Guidelines say you should try publishing around 80 percent content that's highly relevant for your followers and no more than 20 percent "promotional" content. In a non-profit context promotional would mean asking for donations, congratulating yourself :) or members of your own community.

No-nos: 1. Pleading for more followers; "Help us reach 1000 fans!". Just doesn't work! Good content is the only way to attract new fans and create more engagement.

2. Cellphone photos indoors... You'll need one hell of a clever, newsworthy picture to compensate for bad quality. Most probably you're better off working with language instead.

Bra och dåliga exempel från SF DVC
Funkar bra:

Ingen bild, ingen relevans, obegripliga interna förkortningar, otydligt.

Hur i helsike gör man budgetmöten intressanta?
